Manmohan Yadav was born in Tapah, Perak. He studied at the Government English School, Tapah till 1955 and the Anglo-Chinese School, Ipoh till 1958. After a short stint as a teacher, he joined the University of Western Australia where he completed his doctoral thesis (PhD) in 1969, on neonatal immune mechanisms, on a University Scholarship. Then on a Nuffield Postdoctoral fellowship, he conducted pioneering research on the role of the thymus in Marsupials.

Dr. M. Yadav joined University of Malaya in 1970 and immediately established a course in Immunology and started accepting students for the Masters and PhD thesis in this field. In 1974 he went on sabbatical leave to the Institute of Immunology at University of Toronto on the prestigious IDRC Research Fellowship. On his return he initiated research studies jointly with the University Hospital Paediatrics Department, on milk allergy in infants because the disorder was a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children at that time. The research team discovered and reported for the first time in the world, the relationship between milk protein allergy, enteropathy and lactose intolerance. The publications in Archives of Diseases of Childhood still continue to receive citations. The team continued to pioneer work on allergy to milk, soya bean, and egg. They also developed tissue culture techniques, for first time in the world, to determine sensitivity of the gut in immediate and delayed responses to milk allergens. Over 50 research papers including chapters in books, on various aspects of allergy were published in prestigious journals and books.

Apart from the studies on allergy, Dr. Yadav also initiated a second research interest, investigating the role of viruses in the development of Cancer. In the early years around 1979, he established molecular and immunological detection techniques for Epstein-Barr virus in Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Later in 1985 he included other viruses particularly Human Herpes virus-6, 7 and 8, and Human Papilloma virus (HPV) in his studies of the oral and cervical carcinoma. Many papers on aspects of the expression of oncogenes in breast cancer, and virus developmental antigens in cervical carcinoma and oral cancer were published in international journals.

He has received many honours. In 1979 he was a visiting Professor to College de France in Paris as an invitee of the French Government, in 1979-1980 he was World Health Organization fellow in the laboratory of an eminent immunologist at University College, London. Dr. Yadav is the first Malaysian recipient of Yamagiva-Yoshida memorial international award in 1983 which was spent at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, and the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, and in 1985-86 he is the first and only Malaysian recipient of the prestigious Eleanor-Roosevelt International Fellowship which was taken at the National Cancer Institute, Fredrick, USA, and in 1987 he obtained the Beckman Research Grant to visit research establishment in USA. He received funding for his research from many international sources.

Professor Yadav has presented his research work in over 35 Conferences throughout the world and attended many workshops. He has published over 230 research papers in referred international and national journals. His book entitled, 'Causal Triggers of Allergy and Asthma' is expected to be released in 2004. Professor Yadav is also active in various National Societies. He was the President of the Malaysian Society of Health in 1997 and 1998.

At University of Malaya, Dr. Yadav became an Associate Professor in 1975, and Professor in the field of immunology in 1991. He was the Head of the Department of Genetics and Cellular Biology in 1992-94 and retired from University in September 1996. As visiting professor he still lectures on Immunology to post-graduate students. He is currently attached as a consultant allergist to Pantai Medical Centre, Bangsar, where he has established an allergy testing services using the latest technologies.
